KOTA GEDE, Life Between Walls
Being one of the oldest surviving Javanese towns, Kotagede embodies rich stories along its life. In its densely populated settlements many signs and traces accumulated in the past four hundred years collide with footprints of the sixteenth century religions reformation. Bourgeois lifestyle and architecture lie adjacent to or even blended with those of the noble and religious elites. Holy tombs and springs with strong smell of incense and flowers neighbor bustling and colorful market places selling livestock and fabricated clothing.
