Haruki Murakami was born in Kobe in 1949 and studied Greek drama at Waseda University in Tokyo. From 1974 to 1981 he managed a coffee shop specializing in jazz and began writing the novels that have made him the most popular young writer in Japan today. He has also translated several major contemporary American writers into Japanese, among them F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Irving, Paul Theroux, Raymond Carvet, and Tim O'Brien. to date, Norwegian Wood has sold more than 4 million copies in Japanese.rnrnAlfred Bimbaum was born in Washington, DC. in 1957, and grew up in Tokyo. After graduating from the University of Southern California, he returned to Japan for graduate studies at Waseda universitu. He now lives in Barcelona, Spain.
