Under The Microscope MUSCLES How We Move and Exercise
Muscles have the unique ability to contract - or get shorter - and then relax and return to their original length. By getting shorter - an action that requires energy - muscles are able to move parts of the body. They bend and straighten our legs when we run, and squeeze our esophagus (the tube that links the throat to the stomach) when we swallow food.
There are three types of muscles found inside the body. The bulk of the body's muscles are skeletal muscles. These pull on bones to move us around. They are the muscles that "bulge" when a bodybuilder poses. Smooth muscles are found in the walls of the body's hollow organs, such as bladder. They perform automatic tasks such as making blood vessels narrower or propelling food along the intestines. Cardiac muscle forms the nonstop, hard working pump, the heart, that moves bolld around the bodu. The volume of Under the Microscope focuses on the body's muscles to see what they do and how they work.
