This international Conference on Gems and Tourism took place in South Kalimantan, Indonesia , an area renowned for its production of raw gemstones and diamonds. However, while the resources are there, the area is relatively weak in designing and marketing its own designs of brand-name-gems and jewellery. Therefore, South Kalimantan normally supplies the raw materials for more experienced and sophisticated artisans and jewellers in Jakarta, as well as cities in other parts of Asia which go on to develop higher value lines
