This book was originally prepared by the author and members of the enviromental group Yayasan Indonesia Hijau for publication in bahasa Indonesia. It was meant as a text for students and the general public to raise awareness of Indonesia's great biological riches and the need for their conservation. The Indonesian edition appeared in 1986 and a sister volume in Dutch was produced on behalf of Wereld Natuur foods. With increased interest in Indonesia and the archipelago's wild places it now seems timely to bring our an English edition.
